The key is being organised
The NATO Codification System (NCS) is the biggest codification and cataloguing system in the world. The system enables NATO countries to exchange logistics information on over 16 million items of supply, enabling all items of equipment to be fully supportable when units deploy.
For an item of equipment to enter the UK’s Military Supply chain it must be codified.
An NSN is broken down into 3 parts:
1005 – 13 – 123 – 4567
| 1005 | NATO Supply Classification Code (NCS) |
| 13 | Country assigning the NSN (NCB code) |
| 123 – 4567 | Non-significant number which, with NCB Code, uniquely identifies the item |
